Hello to everyone.
I am a medical student from Europe. My country is part of E.E.A. (European Economic Area).I'll explain why i wrote that.
I am a 5th year student in the best medical university of my country.I can describe myself as a good student.I am studing a lot but not like crazy,i am going out at least 4-5 times per week,i have a girlfiend and live by myself. So as you see not quite a huge ammount of time for studing.Nevertheless i am smart enough when i study i am living in a different world and don't do anything else.
My university made (not ERASMUS) an exchange program with the US for those who are seeking residency in surgery.I had very good marks in the 3rd and 4th year so i applied, and they accepted me.
I was for 3 months at Mount sinai hospital and Cornell hospital.
Well i can say one thing for sure THEY ARE NOT SO GREAT AS I WAS ECPECTED THEM.
I was anxious about the level of the other students and residents there.I found out that all the residents are not willing to use their brain for a differential diagnosis because all of them are based on the laboratory exams(blood tests-CT-MRI).In my country the first thing they teach doctors is how to interact with the patientr in order to avoid too much tests.
I had a supervisor who everybody said that is a MADDOG,well after 1 week i was his ghost in the hospital. He was always refered kindly and he was always looked suprised when i knew more diagnostic procedures than his residents there.Hey guys i am telling you the truth,i am sure that there are great students in the US,but A LOT of them where bellow average.
It was one day that a lady came with angina pectoris. The department chief asked about chest pain and then we went out the room he was start asking questions about arteries.1:they knew only 20% of arteries and branches.2:they couldn't recall the some basic arterial variations and 3:they were so frightened like i never seen.Anyway i am not trying to be the smart one but i am in love with anatomy and i was sitting last in the row,so all the questions were coming to me and i was answering them. The program director told everybody The throne of this department is going to Europe,i feel sorry for all of you.
Anyway before my visit in the US i was planning to do residency there. To tell you the truth it's great. These guys have hospitals like 5*hotels and the salaries after are very good.
BUT all the residents have a behaviour like shit, they don't treat to each other nice, they gossip A LOT for everybody ecxept the chairmain because they all kiss his ass.Only few of them see Medicine as one of the most ancient study, most of them always talk about money-money-money.
I don't know maybe i will try to get the USMLE's but you have really to ask yourselves does all this worth the try?

PS1:My english were not good enough but i managed to speak with patients very good
PS2:The Chiarman told me that he was very pleased to have me there and if i ever concider to be a resident in the US he will offer me a prematch even with USMLE scores at low 80"s(and he was in a top rated speciality)
3:I understant why they don't like IMG's especially from India,Pakistan,Egypt,East Europe. They can't live with the fact that students studing in these countries with such problems could be better than them studing at harvard and columbia etc.I told to the risidents there that the some of the greatest doctors of alltime came from Asia-Ňast Europe.Of course they dindt have a clue about the names i said, names like Razis,Avikenns, semelvais(sorry for the misspelling).
Anyway inever wanted to stay there i wanted only to practice there and then come back.BUT FOR THOSE WHO ARE WILLING TO PASS,I WISH YOU THE BEST,MOST OF YOU WORTH IT AND YOU CAN MANAGE IT MORE EASY THAN YOU CAN EVER IMAGINE.JUST STUDY HARD NOW AND ALL YOUR HARD WORK WILL BE APPRICIATED AT THE END
Friendly EEA
