Anemia of chronic disease may have normal MCV in most(2/3) of the times(also normal MCHC,MCH). In only 1/3ed patients it may be microcytic(low MCV).
RDW- quantifies the anisocytosis(different sizes). it is high in iron deficient anemia as compared to thalassemias(uniform size of RBC in thal).
All hemolytic anemias(except thalassemia) are normocytic (i.e normal MCV)anemias with high retic counts.
Hemolysis at birth or first 6 months can be result from group incompatiability, type incompatiability, heriditory spherocytosis or elliptocytosis, G6 PD deficiency.
