Current recommendations for treatment are a single dose of intravenous or intramuscular ceftriaxone (25 - 50 mg/kg) with saline eye lavage with or without topical antibiotics. Topical erythromycin is recommended until chlamydial cultures are negative. If the child has chlamydia, oral treatment with erythromycin (40 - 50 mg/kg/day divided into four doses for 14 - 21 days) is required to prevent the late onset of chlamydia pneumonitis.
