Right answer: Carotid endarterectomy
The Asymptomatic Carotid Atherosclerosis Study found that patients who have asymptomatic carotid artery stenosis with a 60% or greater reduction in diameter, and whose general health makes them good candidates for elective surgery, will have a reduced 5-year risk of ipsilateral stroke if carotid endarterectomy is performed. Perioperative morbidity and mortality in the study was below 3%. Aggressive management of modifiable risk factors is also important.
