U.S. Centers for Disease Control established guidelines that call for physicians who perform “exposure-prone” procedures — including surgery — to be tested and to stop performing
such procedures if they are HIV positive. They are also urged to reveal their HIV status to patients before operating and obtain informed consent.
The American Medical Association, on the other hand, advises health care workers that they don’t need to tell their patients their HIV status, nor do they have to stop practicing
But these are only guidelines and also differ from State to State.
