It does depend. During my residency I worked with people in their 50s. It is not extremely common, but does happen sometimes. You need to have EXCELLENT scores on FIRST attempts, otherwise your chances will become virtually impossible.
PS. Do not count on the need in doctors. The number of American Graduates (as well as Caribbean) is increasing and the number of residency slots remains the same. Do the math.
