if you applied for an extension, you are legal in the usa and in good status until you get a response from the uscis. you dont have to leave on april 16th. if they deny your visa, you have to leave ( check uscis web site to see how many days grace period you have till you are required to be out of the country), if they approve it, you should be fine.
