1. You'll have to make this decision yourself (about taking prematch). I took it, so did my husband. We regretted it later. We both had good scores and better programs contacted us later in the interviewing process. But, on the other hand, you never know if something else will be available to you.
2. I don't know exactly what kind of problem people get into. It's unethical, it puts you in bad light to the program where you are going to be. Also, if you sign a contract, technically you are bound by it. Depending on the language they use they may have a case against you. I have never heard of anyone being taken to court though.
