What is your goal in doing externship in neuro? Are you applying to neuro? That is the only thing that will make your experience meaningful You need to have USCE in the field you are applying to. Keep in mind that even if you apply to neuro, you have to match in preliminary as well which si an extremely difficult task.
You need to target the right specialties and do externship in them. For instance psych is one of the less competitie specialties but if you don't have extensive experince in psych with at least 2 LORs from psych physicians you bare almost no chance to get in.
You have to be a little bit more tactical. Doing usce in a University does not increase your chances especially if you are doing it in the wrong specialty.
LORs are critical but again target right. CV and PS play a role but scores in LORs are critical as I said in the book.
