step 3 for sure, then research"my program is university program and i personally know a 10 yrs old grad who matched in med/ped program which is considered one of the top 10 in US but she did 4-5 yrs of basic research" but anyways, the most important thing in matching is connections!! my idea with the research is one package, you work with university profesors, you make good relationship with them and expand your network. if they like you, they will even fight for you! but you have to be smart, brilliant, show compassion for the work you do and show them that you are a great fit to be a resident and physician in the future and your scores and attempts were a step down for you to grow and get stronger. you hear from ppl that if you work in research, they will use you. well, thats most of the time true for foreign doctors but american doctors will help you. if you choose to do externship, go for psychiatry in a decent program that you think you have a good chance to get in. the guy who said that there is chinese with publications who did not match, i'll propably believe him because alot of these asian FMG's have very bad english and they try to avoid speaking and they just stick to there lab or there desk and work alot! connections afshan is the most important thing for some body in your case and in general and that is the bottom line.
