If the university is very good does not usually take IMGs, then you will have a hard time getting there with your scores.
If you have great scores I would have said, use connection to get in. But the connections need to be able to sell something about you.
It is great that you got that research position, it will boost your CV and make you more competitive for future applications.
The great thing is that there are many prog in the US and one of them may be interested and hire you.
Yes, apply to programs in States where the 7-year-rule is not reinforced.
