I do not believe that applying to more programs now will increase your chances. Also, you may have been put on a waiting list by many programs b/o your excellent scores, but poor performance on skill assessment. You are right, there will be more interview spots available now. If you are on a waiting list you will hear from them anyway. Calling them and asking questions will just annoy PCs.
