Hi, Geeti. As I alluded, the positions are reasonably competitive due to their smaller number and the spaces reserved for domestic graduates. However, some of the less desirable hospitals may have a couple of openings (these would be competitive as well). The best approach is to enquire with the state medical board of choice (ie-Victoria, New South Wales, WA, etc) and request a list of teaching hospitals. You then can contact each hospital and enquire re the availability of intern positions. Occasionally, an off-cycle opening may become available due to attrition or LOA, etc, however, I haven't seen this often. You certainly can try for a position this year, however, honestly, I think it unlikely (but, it is still possible albeit unlikely).
Regardless of what some suggest, I am licensed in both the US and Australia and I must tell you that it is a time consuming and tedious process.
