What you should have done at the time of the orientation was walking into the Human Resource Department and talking to one of the supervisers. They should know better about your green card/visa status; they are dealing with this kind of peoblem every day. Now it seems too late. But you should still be able to talk to them, and present the evidence of the match to them, and tell them: "look, your side made a mistake. I want my position back, even if it means I have to start the next year." I would not say the program director discriminated against you, but they should know that it is the PD's ignorance that caused you your job. Be nice but firm about it. Do not let them push you around, insist to talk to a manager, or even the HR director.
