I think you're misunderstanding the point of visas here.

H-1 is employer dependent, your employer is your sponsor. As soon as you're stop working for them, you lose your H-1 status. Same with J-1 - it is awarded to exchange students, as soon as your exchange program ends your J-1 becomes invalid. When you become accepted into a residency program, the said program becomes your employer and they will sponsor your next visa, H-1, J-1 whatever they want to do.
