Dress code for men during residency

hey guys

what do u guys wear during a residency.....are ties/ full sleeved shirts always a must (e.g. in New York City)? Can you wear half sleeved shirts without ties, or similar casual? are khakis allowed or formal trousers needed? stupid Qs I know, but pls answer!
