in general, it's not just the PD who makes the decision but usually a committee composed of faculty or attendings. they look for certain things:
1. u don't have to be brilliant but at least competent and willing to learn. remember they want people who they think can pass the boards.
2. you need to be independent and hard working, can work by yourself but at the same time work with people from different backgrounds.
3. communication is a plus, the more understood you are, the better your chances.
4. be nice and polite. nobody will choose a moody candidate or someone who is charming and polite.
5. finally, show a commitment to them that you will not transfer out of their program after one year. take the time to learn about their program and the patient population they serve.
