H1B to J1 in the middle of residency

Hi friends
is it possible to go from H1B to J1 in the middle of residency? I have only 2 years of H visa left and I don't have 3years of H visa to complete the residency. what will be the problems I am going to face if I do it inthe middle of residency? My spouse filed for green card but I am not sure whether we are going to get it in the mean time. Thanks all.
