Mental Status exam

In a patient presenting with low mood or psychotic symptoms do we actually perform a psychiatric mental status exam?

I ask because in first aid for step 2 CS the psych mental status exam is included in the list of investigations like the forbidden maneouvres (rectal, pelvic exam etc).
